Thyssenkrupp recently started operations at its $4.6 billion carbon steel plant near Mobile. Beginning in 2011, the plant employs 2,000 people and will produce 4.3 million metric tons of steel annually. The plant is one of the largest, if not the largest, foreign investments in the United States and generates local jobs many times the number of direct employees of 2,000.

National Cement Company is a member of the Vicat Group, a French company started in 1853 by Louis Vicat, the inventor of artificial cement. The Vicat Group operates on four continents. Vicat purchased the Alabama plants in 1974, its first foreign acquisition. In Ragland, Alabama, the company operates a limestone quarry and Portland cement plant with an annual capacity of nearly one million tons of Portland cement and mortar per year.
